Secretary-General Patricia Scotland has conveyed her condolences following the death of former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke at the age of 89.
She said: “I am saddened to hear of the passing of a great son of Australia and a distinguished statesman of the Commonwealth.
“His commitment to the people of Australia was exemplary, as a champion for workers, a defender of human rights, and an advocate for social policies that protected the most vulnerable in society.
“His contributions to the Commonwealth, including his vigorous leadership in the Commonwealth’s fight against apartheid, will long be remembered.
“On behalf of the Commonwealth family of nations, I convey my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, and join the Government and the people of Australia in commemorating the record of leadership, practical action and cooperation that are his legacy.”
Bob Hawke served as Prime Minister of Australia from 1983 to 1991.
